Shadow
6/17/11- Hi
Raquel, I have been having trouble with my internet or you would have
heard from me sooner. I am SOOOOOOOO happy with
Shadow, just love him. He
is such a good boy. He gets along great with Fred's mare Maggie and the
other two boys. Thank you again for the chance to have such a wonderful

4/16/11- Shadow left for his new home today to a wonderful couple in TN! Congrats Shadow and his new family!
3/20/11- Shadow had a very eventful weekend! He attended "Round Up at the Ranch" at Hidden Cave Ranch in Burkesville, KY with us taking out several riders through the trails and in the ring. Then Sunday we took a 4 hour trail ride with the Saddle Club here! Green River State Park is some great riding. About 75 riders, mule team wagons, creeks, bridges, woods, fields, hills, hollows, we did it all! We had such a blast, he is such a fun ride and has a super smooth ground covering gait. We couldn't be more proud of our Shadow!!
12/25/10- For the first time in the 8 years I have been here, we finally had a white X mas!
9/27/10- Today I switched Shadow to a Tom Thumb bit and we had a great ride. He was much more responsive and stopped on a dime. He is getting there! We were lucky enough to have a beautiful rainbow glowing in the background.
9/16/10- Pics of our ride today below. We are taking it just a little at a time because Shadow is still very out of shape and it will take small amounts of consistent work to condition him properly. He was very responsive and attentive and did his best to do what was asked of him. He will make a GREAT riding horse with some more work and training. He has a good mind and disposition and really enjoys the attention.
9/13/10- Shadow was placed back with the bachelor herd on the 6th. He is starting to accept his new herd instead of fretting for his former. We are in business now that those wolf teeth have been removed. We had the most amazing ride this evening and he has a gait that's to die for! He is strong in the mouth, but was very respectful and attentive. Way to go big guy!
8/29/10- Shadow is back to himself again and is going out alone in the turnout pen. We think he may have bruised his hoof running the fence line trying to keep track of his girls. We have put him where he can watch them comfortably. He will be stalled nightly and out during the day. he is back to normal weight now- 980Lbs and is eating a diet of Triple Crown Lite 2x daily.
8/24/10- Shadow had his teeth done today and we removed the wolf teeth that were loose and growing improperly. We think this will help Shadow in his training and hopefully alleviate any pain he may have felt in his mouth. Shadow is on stall rest this week as he has come up sore on his near hind hoof.
8/7/10- Shadow is now slim and trim so he's being weaned off his thyroid meds. He was ridden today and will need quite a bit of training before he is ready to go to his forever home, unless the home can provide him the training he needs under saddle. Right now he is being worked in a bitting harness everyday and further ground work being established for under saddle training.
7/10/10- Shadow is doing wonderfully and is loosing weight right on track. Him and Midnight were separated a few weeks ago and their new arrangement consists of Shadow going out with the herd during the daylight hours, then being stall kept nightly. Midnight going out nightly and staying in during the day. His muzzle was starting to rub his nose raw, so this is a great arrangement to be able to give him some time to keep the muzzle off. We should be able to have his riding evaluation by the end of the month! He continues to feel better on those fronts as his weight diminishes.
6/7/10- Shadow and Midnight were placed in the senior herd today and Shadow loves his new arrangement! To date he has lost about 50 pounds and his thrush has cleared up. We are still treating once per week as a preventative. He is still a bit sore on those fronts and does has some wind puffs. We feel this is because of the extra weight he is carrying around and will subside when the stress to his legs diminishes. He will continue to receive his thyroid meds for another 30-60 days to promote his weight loss. Riding evaluation will not be scheduled until he has lost another 100 pounds.
5/20/10- Shadow came in with just one shoe on his front right hoof. None of us; the vet, the farrier or the rescue could figure out exactly why... so it was removed today and all his feet were trimmed and the old nasty infected tissues were removed. He is much more comfortable already, and we have stopped packing his front for now. Thrush treatments are being performed daily and Shadow is a willing patient. This is an extremely nice horse, he is just as sweet as they come. He is very curious about the other horses and he doesn't mind a bit to leave Midnight to investigate...Midnight however does not like it much!
INTAKE- 5/17/10- Shadow and his friend Midnight were local horses who's elderly owners deteriorating heath prevented them from keeping the boys. Their wonderful neighbors have provided the boy's care though this difficult time and contacted us for help. Shadow is a 15.3 hand seriously obese TWH gelding. These boys were kept stalled for several months due to Shadow's weight and risk of founder and the lack of a dry lot so they both have some serious thrush. Shadow weighs 1255 pounds, about 250 Lbs overweight. He literally has places where the fat has gathered so much, some are bigger than my fists. Shadow's rehab involves packing his sore front feet with Magic Hoof Cushion, BL Pellets for pain, Thyrol-L supplement twice a day for accelerated weight loss, Kopertox treatments for his thrush. This guy will be muzzled for several months with only a few flakes of hay each day. He is just so happy to be outside playing, and that will help him loose those pounds as well. We have them in turnout during the day and stalled next to each other at night. They are very attached to each other at this point, almost dangerously so. They are really liking the other horses around, which will help them grow accustomed to being separated at times. Shadow seems to be a very patient and level headed guy who is wiling to please.
