Ol' Scarecrow

No Fee

6/1/10- We have determined that though some days Scarecrow is a pleasure under saddle, sometimes he is very unpredictable and therefore can be dangerous. The board has voted to place him in a companion home only, we have waived his adoption fees with the understanding that he is not going to make an under saddle or riding horse. He is great on the ground and gets along with all other horses, including youngsters, mares, etc.

5/14/10-  Scarecrow went last weekend to the trainer's place and they have been doing trail training together. I got a glowing report that Scarecrow isn't a bit spooky at all the "scary stuff" set up in the trails, he is a pleasure. He indicated that he is the type of horse you get on and ride. Scarecrow gets antsy just standing around and they are working on standing still under saddle.

4/28/10- Scarecrow has his teeth done today to remove some serious hooks! Thank you Dawn Darnell for your fantastic work with our horses. Scarecrow had an episode of choke last week due to his bolting of his feed. We have since added a large stone to his feed bucket to slow him down. He will be leaving next week for 15-30 days of professional training locally. We look forward to his meet & greet with his potential adopter!

2/26/10- I realized that through all the time we have had Scarecrow, I have never had a picture taken of me riding him! So...without further ado...here is our stunningly gorgeous boy in action! Scarecrow does need an experienced rider, in these pictures he is being ridden by a 13 year old who does have extensive riding experience. SC could make an awesome dressage or flat horse. He has powerful extension and reach, but collects quite nicely as well. He has a natural balance and nice head carriage. He can be strong and needs short intervals of training frequently to keep him focused and attentive. This is not a horse you want to rush or push. He is a great guy and will make someone an awesome mount!

1/10/10- Scarecrow is doing great and is having no problems growing those feet out. He is thriving and is not soar or off in any way. He is our gentle giant, and is ready for his forever home, with his very own human to love.

12/15/09- We think Scarecrow's abscesses are past him now! He has been turned out with the herd as always, and he is not favoring his front. The Biotin seems to be working well, we already see better growth and a healthier sole. Though it will take quite some time for him to grow a whole new and improved foot, he is steadily improving, and we are beginning to think that barefoot is the way to stay. We will keep everyone updated on his progress. Scarecrow is in need of sponsors to help offset the costs of his supplements, farrier care, and special ration. Please see our sponsor page for more details.

10/24/09- Poor scarecrow has just got passed his far front abscess, and now has a near! The farrier has indicated its part of having brittle hoof walls and it being so wet this year. We are now soaking/booting his near front and have our fingers crossed this will be the last of it! He is still happy as ever, no soundness issues on that previously injured knee. We have started him on a Biotin-D supplement. We have discussed the possibility of glue on shoes for him, we have to play the waiting game now and see what his hooves will do.

9-15-09- Scarecrow is doing well, but we have had a really wet year and the wet to dry weather has caused some hoof wall cracking. Scarecrow came down w/ an abscess which has drained and is healing nicely w/ the aid of a hoof boot.

4/29/09- Feeling good this morning! Spring has sprung!

1/28-09- This is our training area- or used to be! Scarecrow is going to investigate the damages...followed by his friends.

Our handsome (but dirty) boy

9/10/08- Scarecrow is doing great and is ready for a forever home. This big boy is very mindful, obedient and caring. He will make someone a fine friend indeed.

4/28/08- This horse is a looker & he knows it! He is so full of life and has a beautiful way of going. This is a very loyal horse and is extremely attentive. He is very well behaved under saddle and just needs a rider who is experienced and confident. He would make someone a great life long partner.

2/13/08-  the snow is finally here!

1/02/08- Scarecrow is steadily coming out of his shell and warming up to everyone here at the rescue. He is a gentle and easy going boy, easy to work with and easy to keep. He is doing well under saddle, he has some issues w/ bridling that we have been working on.

11/25/07 pics- Scarecrow meets the herd-

11/6/07- Scarecrow is a doing well, he is a bit of a nervous Nelly and needs someone who is quiet and patient. He takes a while to warm up to people, but once he does, he is an angel! He has had no problems with any sort of lameness and he gets along very well with other horses.

10/22/07- Scarecrow is adjusting wonderfully to his new home and was ridden for the first time over the weekend. He did well, he is a bit difficult to bridle and will need an experienced rider. We will be providing him with further training along his stay. He has shown no signs of lameness on his knee, though there is a pocket of fluid our vet recommends we do not drain. We see no problems whosoever in his hind end.

INTAKE- 10/9/07- Ol' Scarecrow is a 6 year old registered Thoroughbred gelding who had knee surgery as a 2 year old to correct a track injury. We were told he was not given the proper time to heal on that knee, resulting in a calcified joint that is slightly larger than the other, but we see no signs of swelling or lameness. He has a couple cuts on his head, one above the right eye and one on the right side of his face above the noseband. These are not serious, and should heal up just fine with no scarring. We were also told he has a pulled muscle in his upper hind end, but upon receiving him, we noticed a pretty big scar at the left side croup area. The vet will be evaluating this as well. This is a BIG 16+ hand horse who is a dark bay w/ no white markings. He is in good weight, is kind and sensible and should make a fine mount when rehabilitated.
