Cowboy
8/17/10- Cowboy was adopted along with Mo to a Homeland Security Unit located in Louisville, KY. Mo & Cowboy will be mounted patrol/ search & rescue horses and are becoming a valuable part of a dedicated team. We couldn't be more pleased with their placement. http://www.uswaterpatrol.us/id33.html
8/7/10- Cowboy is home from training and doing wonderfully. I rode him bare back last evening on our new ring area, what a blast!
7/13/10- Cowboy went to training today and we look forward to next week going out and seeing his progress!~
6/28/10- Cowboy is back to his old sweet self now & will be heading off to the trainers in July for a few week crash course in desensitizing. Brandon will be showing him the ropes of the roads, the trails, how to pony other horses, pack things, and all the scary stuff a horse could encounter. We know he'll do just fine!
6/7/10- Cowboy was moved to the back in the young herd today as he was becoming very dominate up front with the seniors and was getting very herd bound. We took a trail ride today and he was more concerned about leaving his herd than he was about doing his job! We are hoping being with the youngsters will lower him in the pecking order and allow him to better focus on his task at hand. He has been weaned completely off his grain for the summer as the grazing is good and he is becoming a bit on the heavy side. He has been completely off al meds for a month now with no incidents.

5/14/10- Through lots of trial and error, we have finally found a routine for Cowboy that works for this pollen season! The meds we have him on now are very cost effective and affordable. When pollen count is high, he receives Tri-Hist Granules antihistamine each morning in his senior. Only if there is a spell of coughing, he receives 15ccs of Cough ease orally 1x per day. This routine has been working for almost 2 months now with out a heaving incident. Cowboy should not be ridden hard in extremely hot or humid weather. He also should not be ridden when the pollen count is high. He is the type of horse who can go without being ridden for quite sometime and still be trusted to behave when you climb in the saddle.
2/26/10- Cowboy was ridden in the pasture today with Buddy and Scarecrow. He does much better in a hackamore bit, he was delightful. Here are pics of him being ridden by Mike our director. Mike is a beginner rider and Cowboy was very honest! Cowboy would be a great husband horse or even a great mount for someone who rides infrequently. With his COPD, he needs to be ridden in relatively short intervals, and not too strenuously. He has a jog to die for!

1/17/10- Cowboy's feet were trimmed Friday, and his teeth done today! He is all set for his forever home. Cowboy has been weaned off his thyroid meds and is thriving on his senior ration.
1/10/10- Cowboy is doing great and is enjoying his herd life. We have had no more breathing problems, and are weaning him from the thyroid meds. Here he is enjoying our snow!
12/15/09- Beginning 12/1/09 Cowboy had a spell of COPD. It lasted about 4 days, and was severe at the start. You could hear him wheezing, and see him gasping for breath. We believe this was brought on by his hay, and from that point on his ration was changed to TC Senior, beet pulp and alfalfa cubes only. We found a bronchodialator oral medicine compounded by a vet in Bowling Green that works wonderfully for him. Upon him getting through his spell, and getting used to his new ration, Cowboy met the herd and is now a proud herd member! At first he did not want to join in with them too closely, but now seems more comfortable. So far no real arguments or disagreements. He is now the proud owner of a winter coat, which I'm sure he enjoys. We need sponsors for Cowboy, to offset the costs of his medicine and feed. Please see our sponsorship page if you can help.
11/21/09- Cowboy was worked for the first time today and did fantastic. We put him on a lunge first and he was soft and quiet in both directions.

When I climbed in the saddle he was very attentive and obedient. He was very hard in the mouth though and I could tell his mouth was uncomfortable. He has not had his teeth done yet, so the problem may stem from that. He may have never been bitted either. I didn't ask for much and our next ride will be with a hackamore to see if we can get some softness through his head and neck. All and all he did wonderful though and is a very kind and honest guy.
11/01/09- Cowboy is doing fantastic and has had no breathing problems whatsoever while in our care. He enjoys people and has a puppy dog personality. Julius (our newest barn cat) decided he was going to give Cowboy his first riding evaluation! He jumped on his back while he was being groomed in the isle on the cross-ties. Cowboy just looked back like "hey...whatever..." What a good boy!

10/24/09- Cowboy had his feet trimmed today and was pretty good! We were told he had a problem with his fronts being done. So we did the hind first, and he seemed to be ok with that! So far we are not seeing any lameness or difficulty in his breathing. He is eating just a bit of Triple Crown Senior w/ his Thyro-L 2 x per day. A few flakes of grass hay as well. So far so good!

INTAKE- 10/20/09- Cowboys Wonder Otoe has been relinquished to the rescue by his loving owner who could no longer keep him financially. Cowboy is a 20 year old happy, healthy bay registered Quarter Horse gelding. He has allergies to pollens that have led to COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). He does not need daily treatment, but when he has flair ups, must receive medication for several days. He does have thyroid issues as well and will be receiving supplements daily. He is allergic to Penicillin. He is a sweet and easy going guy who is just now settling into his new environment. We are told he is easy to keep and is broke to ride. He will be vet checked and have his hooves and teeth done in the upcoming weeks. We are excited to welcome Cowboy into the rescue family.
